What this scope is
Solid timber flooring uses single-piece hardwood planks, typically 14–22 mm thick and 80–180 mm wide. Long planks give a calmer visual line than short parquet blocks. Solid timber can be sanded and re-coated multiple times over its service life, which is one of its key practical advantages.

How we run a project
- Site survey, subfloor moisture reading, plank-width recommendation.
- Quotation with species, plank dimensions, finish option and timeline.
- Material acclimatisation in the room for several days before laying.
- Plywood underlay, then plank installation with expansion gaps.
- Multi-pass sanding (coarse, medium, fine grit) with vacuum-equipped equipment.
- 2–3 coats of varnish with light inter-coat sanding; final cure before furniture is moved back in.
Plank format options
Strip flooring — narrow planks (typically 60–90 mm wide), tighter visual rhythm, lower cost per square foot. Standard plank — 90–140 mm wide, balanced look. Wide plank — 140–180 mm and above, calmer surface but more sensitive to seasonal movement; specification should match the room conditions.
Finish choice
Matt, satin and gloss finishes are available in both water-based and oil-based systems. Bona premium finishes are offered for owners who want the higher-end coating; they cost more than standard grades.
Things to confirm before fabrication
- Solid timber moves more with humidity than engineered wood. In Singapore’s climate this is managed by acclimatisation, expansion gaps and stable indoor humidity.
- Solid timber is generally not recommended for wet areas (bathrooms, balconies exposed to rain). For semi-outdoor or wet locations, alternative species and finishes apply.
- Plank thickness, width and finish choice affect cost. Wider and longer planks usually cost more than narrower strip flooring of the same species.
