Key Considerations for Hardwood Flooring Installation
Parquet Pattern
Refers to the arrangement and design of the wood pieces used in the flooring. Earlier generations considered common patterns such as herringbone, chevron, basketweave, and brickwork. Each pattern offers a distinct aesthetic appeal. Today’s modern design emphasizes the beauty of the wood grain. This means wider and longer wood planks to match the living space available.
Tongue and Groove
The joining system used in parquet flooring where one side of a plank (tongue) fits into the groove of the adjacent plank. This interlocking method ensures a secure and tight fit during installation. This is unlike earlier generations of thinner parquet wood planks without the tongue and groove to click in a secure manner.
Solid Parquet
Flooring made entirely of solid wood from American Oak, Walnut, Birch, Maple and the commonly available Burmese Teak. Sizes range from 73mm to width of 95mm to 125mm for custom-ordered sizes. The thickness currently available would be 11mm and 17mm thick. Solid parquet can be sanded and refinished multiple times, making it a durable option, especially a 17mm thick parquet.
Engineered Oak
A thin layer of hardwood, usually around 3mm thick, used as the top surface of engineered parquet flooring. Veneers are glued to multiple layers of plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF) core, providing stability and reducing the risk of warping. Engineered Oak provided great stability from wood warping when installed in a humid, hot and cold living area. However, the thinness of the veneer reduces the option of multiple sanding and varnishing.
Moisture Barrier
A layer or coating applied to the subfloor to prevent moisture from seeping up and causing damage to the hardwood parquet flooring. Typically, one would consider applying a flexible membrane prior to the installation of the parquet. The owner can also consider the installation of WBP-type plywood as the underlay. WBP is short for Weather and Boil Proof. This means WBP Plywood can not only pass the hot water boiling test but also can get wet and dry with less risk of delamination. It can withstand a harsher working environment compared to regular plywood.
Subfloor Preparation
The process of preparing the existing floor surface before installing the parquet flooring. This may involve self-levelling, patching, and ensuring the subfloor is clean, dry, and free from any debris. It is critical to ensure the floor is level as too much sanding on a thinner type of parquet would damage its strength at the joints
Adhesive
The type of glue used for securing the parquet flooring to the subfloor. Different adhesives are suitable for different types of parquet and subfloor materials. Typically cost is a factor affecting the type of glue used. It is important to also consider a suitable period for curing the glue to the wood. And allowing the wood to stabilize or equalize the moisture differential inherent in that wood itself compared to the ambient humidity.
Expansion Gap
The small space left around the perimeter of the room during installation to allow for natural expansion and contraction of the wood due to changes in temperature and humidity. The gap is covered by the thickness of the skirting.
Varnishing/Finishing
The application of protective coatings to the sanded parquet flooring. Varnishes or finishes can enhance the appearance of the wood, add durability, and provide resistance to scratches and stains. Needless to say, the premium type of water-based varnish would be able to enhance your wood flooring better compared to a more cost-conscious alternative
Underlayment
A layer of material (e.g., foam, cork, or rubber) placed between the subfloor and the parquet flooring. Underlayment can improve acoustic insulation, moisture protection, and provide a smoother surface for installation.
Sanding
The process of removing the top layer of the wood to create a smooth and level surface. Sanding is often performed during refinishing or restoration works.
